The train bypasses the notorious Causeway road traffic that can delay cars and buses by 1 to 3 hours during peak times. Tickets cost RM5 ($1.10) for the train itself, making it the cheapest cross-border option. Trains run roughly every 1 to 2 hours from early morning to late evening.

Tickets sell out fast, especially for weekend and holiday departures. Book online through the KTMB website or app 30 days in advance when tickets are released. Set a calendar reminder for the booking window. Tickets cannot be purchased at the station on the day of travel if the train is sold out. Peak demand times are Friday evening (JB to Singapore), Sunday evening (Singapore to JB), and any Malaysian or Singaporean public holiday. Weekday mid-morning and early afternoon trains are easiest to book. You need your passport number to book and must carry the same passport when traveling.

Clear Singapore immigration on arrival. The entire process is more organized than the road crossing because passenger volumes are controlled by train capacity. Singapore immigration at Woodlands is typically faster than at the Tuas or Causeway road checkpoints. Have your passport, SGAC (Singapore Arrival Card), and any necessary visas ready. The return process is reversed — clear Singapore exit, train, Malaysian immigration entry.

JB Sentral is about 30 to 40 minutes from Forest City by Grab, costing RM25 to RM40. The CW3 bus from Forest City to JB Sentral is an option at RM2 but takes longer and is less reliable. For the train, budget total door-to-door time of 2 to 2.5 hours from NS to central Singapore. This compares favorably to the 1 to 4 hours by car via the Tuas Second Link during peak traffic. The train is most valuable on Friday evenings and weekends when road crossings are congested.
