Every year between June and October, agricultural burning in Indonesia (primarily Sumatra and Kalimantan) sends smoke across the Strait of Malacca to Malaysia and Singapore. This transboundary haze can push air quality into unhealthy ranges for days or weeks at a time. The Air Pollutant Index (API) in Johor can spike from a normal 30 to 50 (good) to 150 to 300 (unhealthy to very unhealthy) during severe haze events. In extreme years like 2015 and 2019, schools and businesses closed. The haze varies dramatically year to year — some years are barely noticeable while others are severe.

02

Health Impact and Protection

Haze consists of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) that penetrates deep into the lungs. Short-term exposure causes eye irritation, coughing, sore throat, and headaches. Extended exposure worsens asthma, bronchitis, and cardiovascular conditions. When API exceeds 100, limit outdoor activity. Above 200, stay indoors with windows closed and air conditioning running (most AC units filter large particles). N95 masks provide effective protection during outdoor exposure. The NS gym is indoors with air conditioning, so you can maintain your workout routine. Morning Burn may be moved indoors on high-haze days.

Monitoring and Planning

Download the IQAir or APIMS (official Malaysian) app to monitor real-time air quality near Forest City. Set alerts for API above 100. The haze is notoriously unpredictable — conditions can change from clear to hazy within hours based on wind direction and burning intensity. If you are planning a trip to NS during June to October, check historical haze data for that period but accept that prediction is unreliable. September and October tend to be the worst months. If you have respiratory conditions, consider timing your NS stay for November through May to avoid haze risk entirely.

Indoor Alternatives During Haze

When outdoor air quality is poor, the NS indoor facilities become even more valuable. The air-conditioned gym, coworking space, and common areas provide clean-air environments. Use this time for intensive study, coding projects, or indoor social activities. Many NS members use haze days as focused work days, treating them like snow days in northern climates. If you need to venture outside, wear an N95 mask (available at pharmacies for RM2 to RM5 each) and limit exposure time. A portable air purifier in your room is a worthwhile investment during haze season — Xiaomi and Coway models are available in JB for RM200 to RM500.

Air quality is an underappreciated health variable. Track it like you track your diet and exercise — it affects your performance and wellbeing more than most people realize.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does severe haze affect Forest City?

Severe haze events (API above 200) occur every 2-3 years on average. Moderate haze (API 100-200) happens most years during August-October for 1-3 weeks. Many years, the haze is barely noticeable at Forest City's coastal location. Wind patterns and Indonesian enforcement of burning bans determine severity each year.

Should I bring an N95 mask to Network School?

If your stay includes June through October, bring a few N95 masks. They are also available cheaply at any Malaysian pharmacy. During COVID, N95 availability improved dramatically. KN95 masks offer similar protection and are widely available. For stays outside haze season (November-May), masks are unnecessary for air quality.

Can the haze cause long-term health problems?

Short-term exposure during a typical 2-4 week haze period is unlikely to cause lasting health damage in healthy individuals. The risk increases for people with pre-existing respiratory or cardiovascular conditions, and with prolonged exposure over multiple years. Take reasonable precautions during haze events and you will be fine.
