Packing for Both NS and Singapore Trips: Wardrobe Strategy for Two Dress Codes
How to pack light for Network School's casual campus life AND Singapore's smart-casual dining and business meetings in one bag.
NS Daily Wear
Network School is extremely casual.
Network School is extremely casual. Most members wear athletic shorts, t-shirts, and flip-flops daily. Quick-dry fabrics are essential — cotton retains sweat and takes forever to dry in tropical humidity. Pack 5 to 7 t-shirts (quick-dry athletic or cotton-synthetic blend), 3 to 4 pairs of shorts, 2 pairs of workout gear for Morning Burn, and 2 to 3 sets of casual evening wear. Lightweight linen or cotton button-up shirts work for slightly dressier NS events. Footwear: running shoes for workouts, flip-flops for campus, and one pair of casual shoes. Limit earth tones and darks — they absorb heat. Light colors stay cooler.
Singapore Attire
Singapore restaurants, bars, and business meetings require smart-casual at minimum. Pack one pair of chinos or dark jeans, one collared shirt or smart polo, and closed-toe shoes (loafers or clean sneakers). Women: one versatile dress or smart separates that work for dining and meetings. Singapore malls have excellent air conditioning that feels cold after Malaysia's heat, so bring a light layer. This Singapore kit takes minimal luggage space but transforms your options. Many NS members keep their Singapore outfit separate in a packing cube, ready to grab for day trips.
One Bag Strategy
Most NS members pack a single carry-on suitcase (22-inch) plus a personal item backpack and manage fine for 3+ month stays. The key is quick-dry fabrics that can be hand-washed and dried overnight. Bring half of what you think you need and buy anything missing at JB malls for cheap. Pack cubes are essential for organization in a small bag. Roll clothes instead of folding to save space. Wear your bulkiest items (shoes, jacket) during travel. Many members also bring a small day pack that compresses flat — useful for JB shopping trips and Singapore excursions.
Climate-Specific Gear
A compact umbrella (fits in your bag for daily carry during monsoon season). A lightweight waterproof rain jacket. Swimwear for the pool. A wide-brim hat or cap for sun protection. Sunglasses with UV protection. Quick-dry microfiber towel for beach trips. One warmer layer for aggressively air-conditioned spaces (Singapore malls, movie theaters, buses). Mosquito-repellent clothing or spray. Anti-chafe products for workouts in humidity. This list covers all climatic conditions you will encounter from Forest City to Singapore to regional travel.

“Packing light is a skill. Every item you do not bring is a decision you do not have to make and a pound you do not have to carry. Less stuff means more freedom.”
Frequently Asked Questions
How many clothes do I really need for 3 months?
7-10 tops, 4-5 bottoms, 7 underwear, 5 pairs of socks, 3 sets of workout gear, and 1 smart outfit. Laundry is done weekly. Quick-dry fabrics can be hand-washed and worn the next day. Most NS members report overpacking on their first visit and bringing less on return trips.
Can I buy clothes cheaply in Malaysia?
Yes, Uniqlo in JB malls offers excellent tropical-appropriate basics at reasonable prices. Local brands at AEON and Tesco offer very cheap basics. For larger Western sizes (XL+), selection is limited. Quality athletic wear is available at Decathlon in JB. Singapore has more international brands if you cannot find your size in JB.
What about formal wear for demo day or investor meetings?
NS demo days are smart-casual at most. A clean collared shirt and chinos are sufficient. For Singapore investor meetings, business casual is the norm — no need for a suit. If a formal occasion arises unexpectedly, JB tailors can produce a custom shirt in 24-48 hours for RM80-150.
